News Channel 3: Hands-On Kalamazoo looks to make neighborhoods safe

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A new campaign kicks off Tuesday in Kalamazoo, hoping to help bring the community together and make it a safer place.

Hands-On Kalamazoo wants to create a grassroots movement focused on engaging the community and wiping out violence from Kalamazoo.

Beginning Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., members from a group called the Aviators will launch their campaign.

They will be focusing on the Northside, Edison, Eastside and Vine Neighborhoods.

They are hoping by starting a dialogue early they can curb some of the violence we saw last summer.

They will spend two hours a day a few days every week walking through the neighborhoods and talking to the residents about what they want and need in their individual communities.

Through the campaign, organizers hope to help residents make positive changes.

“We are all in this community together. We can’t turn a blind eye to what goes on next door because that problem may become our own eventually. Youth violence especially has been a concern in our communities and I think this will be a way to help build connections with the youth and ultimately steer them in the right directions,” said Kris Mbah, the organizer of Hands-On Kalamazoo

The outreach campaign will run from 3:30 to 5:30 every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as we head into summer.Engagement Strategies
